Phil Parkinson said Wrexham have no guarantees of new signings before the transfer window closes, after the club’s 1-1 draw with Watford. The manager spoke to the BBC in the build-up to the match, noting the difficulty of the window for the North Wales club.
Parkinson said the club were frustrated at the Racecourse, where co-chairmen Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac watched the game. He added that he was keen to add “difference-makers” after seeing his side come from behind but struggle to find a winner.
“We’re working towards several options,” Parkinson said. “I had a great chat with Rob and Ryan before the game and Mike (Williamson, CEO) and Sean (Harvey, director). We know what we’re trying to achieve, but we are competing for players who the top teams are looking to get.”
He explained that the players they want are also targeted by clubs in the division and across Europe. “There are no guarantees any signings will come in because the players we’re competing for are wanted by other clubs,” he added.
Parkinson also mentioned the return of Josh Windass, who missed both opening games but is set to return for Friday’s visit of Birmingham City, the final fixture before the window closes. Libby Cacace and Ben Sheaf remain out, with Sheaf a key man in the club’s push for the play-offs last season.
Wrexham have made three signings this summer, including Danny Imray, the wing-back from Crystal Palace who scored the hosts’ equaliser. Imray later hit the post in the 1-1 draw, adding to the frustration at failing to pick up a first win of the campaign. Parkinson said he was pleased with the back-to-back draws but stressed that signings must fit the team’s needs.
"I think the three lads we brought in are good players, and we’d like to add more quality if we can," Parkinson said. "We also have players coming back into the group."
