Wrexham A.F.C. has seen two of its wingers, Jonny Smith and Ben Tollit, complete moves to new clubs. Jonny Smith has signed for Rochdale, while Ben Tollit has joined Halifax Town. This development marks a significant transfer for the club, particularly as Wrexham A.F.C. currently sits 7th in the Championship with 71 points from 46 games, 19 wins, 14 draws, and 13 losses, with a recent form of DLWWL. The team is 24 points behind leaders Coventry in the title race. The loss of these wingers may impact Wrexham A.F.C.'s performance in the upcoming matches. ## What happened? ## Why it matters for Wrexham A.F.C. ## What comes next? Jonny Smith, a Liverpudlian-born player who came through the youth ranks at The Racecourse, made his first team debut as a late substitute in a 1-0 FA Trophy defeat away to Torquay in January 2016. He made his league debut in a goalless draw against Macclesfield the following month and that proved to be his final Wrexham appearance as a highly rated teenager. Smith then made the switch to Bristol City in the summer of 2016. He went straight out on loan to Cheltenham Town, which was the first of five loan stints whilst with The Robins, including with the likes of AFC Fylde, Tranmere Rovers, Oldham Athletic, and Swindon Town. In 2021, Smith linked up with Burton Albion where he made a total of 86 appearances, scoring 10 goals, before signing for Wigan Athletic after two seasons. A mainstay in the Wigan side after signing in July 2023, Smith spent time on loan at Gillingham last season and he has signed a two-year contract with Rochdale, who are back in the Football League after winning promotion from non-league last term, following his exit from the Latics. Ben Tollit, on the other hand, has signed for Halifax following his departure from Morecambe. After starting out in the Everton academy, Tollitt signed for Portsmouth, then in League Two, following a successful trial in the summer of 2015. Tollitt then made the move to Tranmere Rovers in the summer of 2016 and he joined Wrexham on loan in 2018, scoring four goals in 13 National League appearances, before heading back to Prenton Park whom he left in 2019. He made the move to Blackpool and was quickly sent back on loan to Wrexham, for another short-term deal, before signing for Macclesfield Town in January 2020. Spells at AFC Fylde, Oldham Athletic, Kidderminster Harriers, and Chester followed before spending the last two seasons with Morecambe.
