Wrexham A.F.C. have completed their third major signing of the summer window with just under a week remaining until the 2026/2027 EFL Championship season kicks off. Following the recent arrivals of full-back Danny Imray from Crystal Palace and midfielder Ben Whiteman from Preston North End, the Red Dragons have now secured the signature of goalkeeper Anthony Patterson from Premier League side Sunderland. While the club was unwilling to divulge the transfer fee paid, it was said to be a club record £8 million ($10.8 million), as per SI. Given the fee paid, Patterson will likely take over as starting goalkeeper, with manager Phil Parkinson having bounced back and forth between Arthur Okonkwo and Danny Ward since last season (with the latter out injured for much of their first year in the Championship). "Wrexham really suits me in terms of what I want to do in my career, so it feels like a perfect fit," 26-year-old Patterson said. "I've seen the journey that the Club's been on and it's really exciting to now be part of it. I want to play in the Premier League with Wrexham, and I think everything is in place and ready for the Club to do that. "I'm really looking forward to playing in front of our fans, pushing up the league, and getting this Football Club to where it deserves to be." A former England Under-21 international, Patterson joins after 17 years on the books at Sunderland, during which he made a total of 169 appearances across all competitions, playing in League One, the Championship, and once in the Premier League. *To listen to the latest episode of 'All Out Soccer' - **CLICK HERE* Last season, with Dutch international Robin Roefs the nailed-down starter between the sticks, Patterson was loaned to Championship side Milwall in February, appearing in 16 games as they finished the season in third, failing to gain promotion via the Playoffs. Having faced him during this summer's preseason tour of the U.S., Phil Parkinson's Wrexham were clearly impressed by the shot-stopper, with the manager stating on Tuesday that he and his staff were "delighted to welcome Anthony to the Football Club. He's a young keeper, but with a lot of experience at Championship level, and we look forward to working with him." Exactly where this signing leaves Nigerian international Okonkwo - who had become something of a fan favorite over the last few seasons - and Welsh international Ward remains unclear. The summer transfer window won't close until September 1, meaning there is still more than enough time for one/both of Wrexham's keepers to potentially find new homes. As for Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac's side, they could yet look to add further talent to aid in their pursuit of the Premier League dream, having signed 13 senior players during the previous summer window. Their Championship campaign is set to kick off on Monday, August 17, at Welsh rivals Cardiff City, before Watford travels to the Racecourse Ground. This follows a defeat in their first competitive game of the season, losing 1-0 to fellow Championship side Middlesbrough in the First Round of the EFL Cup. League standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 7th in Championship, 71 pts, 19W-14D-13L from 46 games, recent form DLWWL.
