Wrexham A.F.C. Suffered their heaviest defeat since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took charge of the club, losing six-nil (6-0) away to West Ham United on Friday. The previous low point under the Hollywood owners was a 5-0 defeat to Stockport County in September 2023.
Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring in the twenty-eighth minute, with Joel Piroe adding a second before half time. Konstantinos Mavropanos, Taty Castellanos, Mohamadou Kante and Manor Solomon completed the rout in the second half at London Stadium, built for the 2012 Olympics. It was West Ham's biggest win since September 2018, and the result left them top of the Championship table.
Record crowd for Wrexham
The London Stadium crowd of 59,712 was the largest to watch a Wrexham A.F.C. Match, beating the previous record of 54,096 set at Anfield in January 1970, when the Welsh side faced Liverpool in the FA Cup.
Phil Parkinson, the Wrexham manager, had struck an upbeat tone before kick off. "The whole club had been looking forward to the occasion in the capital," Parkinson said. The result will have tempered that mood, coming just twelve months after Wrexham reached the Championship for the first time on the back of three straight promotions and narrowly missed the play-offs last season.
Season slipping away from top of table
The defeat leaves Wrexham with one win from their first seven Championship fixtures, and the club now sit 14th in the table on seven points from six games, six points behind leaders West Brom. Their recent form reads one win, two draws and two defeats in the last five, and they now sit closer to the relegation zone than the promotion places, a stark change from last season's near miss.
Wrexham had drawn 1-1 with Burnley the previous weekend courtesy of a Ekomie goal, and fans can check the club's up-to-date position on our standings page. Parkinson's side next play Southampton, who sit 13th, at home on Saturday, 19 September, a fixture supporters can find on our fixtures page along with the rest of the run-in.
