Wrexham AFC have completed a historic three-season climb from the National League to the Championship. The journey began with the club's takeover by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in February 2021.

Ryan Reynolds said: "Wrexham AFC’s remarkable transformation and rise under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney began when the Hollywood actors completed their takeover in February 2021." The new owners invested £2 million and appointed Phil Parkinson as manager, who quickly recruited striker Paul Mullin from Cambridge United.

After a near-miss in the 2021/22 season, finishing second and losing a play-off semi-final, the club exploded into life. The 2022/23 campaign saw Wrexham amass 111 points and score 116 goals, clinching the National League title with a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood. They followed that with automatic promotion to League One in 2024 and then a second-place finish in 2025 to secure a third consecutive promotion, returning to the Championship for the first time since 1982.

Rob McElhenney said: "The new owners promised ambition, investment and a deeper connection with the Wrexham community in North Wales." That connection was amplified globally by the Emmy-winning documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, renewed through 2029. The club's marquee player, Paul Mullin, scored 110 goals in 172 appearances before his departure earlier this year.

The story continues in the present day, with Wrexham now handling the rigours of the second tier. After seven games of the current Championship season, the team sits 19th with seven points. Their recent form shows one win, two draws, and two losses from the last five outings, including a heavy 6-0 defeat away to West Ham last week. The focus now turns to the next challenge, a home match against ninth-placed Southampton on 19 September. Fans can track the team's progress and upcoming schedule on the club's fixtures and standings pages.
