Wrexham A.F.C. has taken a significant step forward by submitting plans for a new men's first-team building at Colliers Park. Currently, the club trains at this facility, which is owned by Wrexham University and operated by the Football Association of Wales. The proposal aims to create a dedicated Training Pavilion, allowing the first team to have a self-contained training environment without needing to return to the Racecourse Ground for essential services like gym work and rehabilitation. The planning application has been submitted to Wrexham Council following a month-long consultation process, with construction expected to start soon and the facility operational by the 2026-27 season.
While this development is a major milestone, Wrexham A.F.C. remains focused on building their own training ground in the long term. Club officials have acknowledged that this process could take up to five years, as they need to identify suitable land and conduct various feasibility studies. Colliers Park, which was built in 1997 and previously served as Wrexham's training ground, is currently a valuable asset for the club. The facility was once regarded as one of the best outside the Premier League and has hosted teams like Barcelona during their visits to England.
Despite the club's financial challenges in the past, including the sale of their training ground and stadium to Wrexham University in 2011, Wrexham A.F.C. has secured a long-term lease on the Racecourse Ground and is committed to enhancing their training facilities. CEO Michael Williamson emphasized the importance of finding the right land for their future training site, which will require extensive planning and investment. In the meantime, the club will continue to utilize the excellent pitches available at Colliers Park, ensuring that their players have access to quality training environments as they pursue their ambitions in the Championship.
