Wrexham A.F.C. swapped football boots for trailer reversing skills to bank £10,000 for a local heritage project after a charity challenge with long-time sponsor Ifor Williams Trailers.
What happened at the trailer challenge?
Defenders and midfielders took turns behind the wheel of a Tow Max trailer, weaving through a hay-bale slalom in under 80 metres. Dan Scarr set the fastest time, while Harry Ashfield won the tipper-trailer shoot-out. The evening’s bigger prize, though, was the £10,000 cheque handed to the Wrexham Miners’ Project. Ifor Williams also pledged the same amount to Nightingale House hospice in Wrexham.

Humphrey Ker, the club’s community director and a patron of the miners’ project, said the cash will renovate the former Superintendent’s House next to Maesgwyn Road into supported living flats. He added that the donation shows how deeply the trailer firm has stood by the club since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s takeover in early 2021, when Wrexham were still in the National League and facing financial uncertainty.
Ker told the miners’ project AGM that Reynolds and McElhenney were never just buying a football team. “What they were most excited about wasn’t the football necessarily,” he said. “They wanted to use the club as an engine to drive positivity and hope across the town.” The club’s on-field progress is clear: Wrexham A.F.C. finished seventh in the Championship last season with 71 points from 46 games, their highest Football League finish ever.

Wrexham A.F.C. has leaned on the miners’ project for education sessions with the first team, academy and women’s squad. Players learn about the town they represent through stories from the coalfield. The historic site near STōK Cae Ras is a five-minute walk from the Racecourse Ground, keeping the connection close to home.
