The journey east takes in the M62, M6, and A1(M) before joining the A66 into Teesside, and drivers face disruption at multiple points along the way. Long-running lane and slip road closures at Tarbock Island, junction 6 of the M62, are set to continue in some form until spring 2027, while intermittent single-lane closures are also possible on the M6 around junctions 2 to 3. Once on the A1(M), fans will pass through a major widening scheme between junctions 43 and 44, where a 50mph limit and closed hard shoulder have been in place since March and are due to run until August 2026. Nearer Chester-le-Street, National Highways is carrying out bridge maintenance at Lumley Thicks that closes either the northbound or southbound carriageway overnight on an alternating basis, a scheme expected to last until spring 2027. On the final approach into Teesside, overnight works on the A66 between Elton and Yarm bring a reduced 40mph limit, while in Middlesbrough itself, lane closures remain on the A1032 Newport Bridge approach, and a separate closure is affecting Middlesbrough Road in nearby Guisborough until later this month. It's the journey home, rather than the trip out, that carries the greater risk of delay. Because kick-off is in the evening, supporters are likely to be on the road during the overnight closure windows that run from 8pm to 6am at both Lumley Thicks and on the A66, and the alternating nature of the Lumley Thicks closure means it isn't yet clear which carriageway will be affected on the night. The M62 closure between junctions 11 and 12 is eastbound only, so it shouldn't cause problems on the way back.
