Wrexham A.F.C. have completed the signing of Preston North End captain Ben Whiteman on a three-year deal, with the option of a further year. The 30-year-old midfielder joins for an undisclosed fee after making 200 Championship appearances. Whiteman is the club's second summer signing, following full-back Danny Imray from Crystal Palace.
Who is Ben Whiteman?
Whiteman, a product of Manchester United's academy, began his senior career at Sheffield United before spells at Mansfield Town and Doncaster Rovers. He joined Preston in 2021 and has been a key figure, making 43 appearances last season as they finished 14th in the Championship. The midfielder brings leadership and experience to Wrexham, who finished 7th in the Championship last season with 71 points (19W-14D-13L).
Why did Whiteman leave Preston?
Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom criticised Whiteman for forcing a move, stating he crossed a line by telling club bosses he had played his final game. Heckingbottom said, "Ben knew there was a line I didn't want him to cross and unfortunately he has." Despite this, Whiteman expressed excitement about joining Wrexham, calling it an "amazing feeling."
What does this mean for Wrexham A.F.C.?
Whiteman’s arrival strengthens Wrexham’s midfield as they aim for promotion to the Premier League. The club scored 69 goals and conceded 65 last season, finishing 24 points behind leaders Coventry. Whiteman’s experience and leadership could be crucial in bridging that gap. He said, "Wrexham is a club that wants to get to the Premier League and so do I."
