Wrexham A.F.C. Drawn in Cardiff, Transfer Window Looms
Wrexham A.F.C. were held to a 1-1 draw by Cardiff City in their Championship opener, with Kieffer Moore scoring the opening goal in the third minute. However, the Dragons were unable to hold onto their lead, with Rubin Colwill scoring a stunning free-kick in the eighth minute of added time.
Wrexham A.F.C. Fall Short in Key Areas
If you had asked Wrexham fans what they needed at the start of the summer, most would have requested a new goalscorer to supercharge their Premier League promotion bid. With less than two weeks remaining in the window, they still haven't signed one. Although much of the post-match frustration will be directed at Wrexham's inability to hold onto their narrow lead in the closing stages, questions will also be asked about the number of chances they missed as they paid the price for failing to kill off their plucky opponents.
Wrexham A.F.C. Need Moore
The big question ahead of kickoff was where the goals would come from. Wrexham hadn't scored in their last three matches and had failed to find the net in four of their previous six, while last season's top scorer Josh Windass was still sidelined with an injury. It only took three minutes to get the answer. Moore is so often written off as merely a target man because of his imposing build, but he quickly proved there is much more to his game than his aerial prowess with an excellent finish into the roof of the net from a tight angle.
New Signings Make Their Mark
Wrexham have been patient in the summer transfer window, but the early signs suggest that approach could pay off. Parkinson handed starts to new signings Anthony Patterson and Danny Imray in the Welsh capital, while third summer arrival Ben Whiteman began on the bench. The Red Dragons were never going to overhaul their squad this summer, with an emphasis on quality over quantity as they looked to improve a few key areas of an already strong Championship team.
League Standing
Wrexham A.F.C. finished 7th in the Championship last season, with 71 points from 46 games. They are currently 24 points behind leaders Coventry and have scored 69 goals and conceded 65 so far this season, with a goal difference of +4. The transfer window is set to close in two weeks, and Wrexham will be hoping to strengthen their squad before then.
