Wrexham AFC has finalized buying the last land parcel necessary for its new Kop Stand. The transaction with the Welsh Government, made public in early October, gives the club complete control over the larger stadium site and extra space for a public area at the junction of Crispin Lane and Mold Road.

Club CEO Michael Williamson and Welsh Minister Adam Price both emphasized the importance of this acquisition. Adam Price MS, the Welsh Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, called it a major achievement for the football club and for the broader renewal of Wrexham. He expressed pride in the government's role in supporting the club's goals, which are expected to deliver considerable advantages for the area and the North Wales economy. Work is already visible at the Racecourse Ground, with recent aerial images showing structural steel and roof work in progress. According to the club, the development is proceeding as planned.

Project vision and progress

The acquisition is a crucial element of the larger Wrexham Gateway project, seeking to improve the stadium and the adjacent Mold Road area with upgraded transportation connections and communal areas. The new Kop Stand, which will hold 7,750 spectators, is being created by Populous and constructed by McLaren Construction. It will return a permanent stand to the ground's fourth side, raising total seating to over 18,000. This upgrade will also assist the venue in reaching UEFA Category 4 standards. The adjacent area will influence how fans approach the stadium, linking the new construction to a key city artery. The Gateway initiative is a collaborative effort involving Wrexham Council, the Welsh Government, and Wrexham Glyndwr University, financed by various public and private contributors.

This work continues the story of the Racecourse Ground, recognized as the oldest international football stadium in continuous use and the club's base since 1864. The team persists with its league matches as this substantial infrastructure project moves forward.
