Wrexham A.F.C. has obtained planning permission to enlarge the Kop Stand. The Racecourse Ground's total capacity will approach 18,000 after receiving approval from the local planning committee.
Permission was granted for more seats in the Kop Stand. The plans permit an additional 2,250 seats, which will be situated on a new second tier. When combined with a previous approval for seats, this will significantly increase the stand's total capacity. The stadium's overall capacity will see a major rise as a result.
Travel and parking mitigation required
Although the expansion was approved, council officials determined that extra measures for parking management are necessary. The highways department did not object, provided a detailed travel plan is created and followed. Arrangements for funding and enacting further actions must be ready if required. The club and its consultant held a different view from the council regarding whether nearby roads could handle the extra matchday parking. The club's application included a revised Travel Plan offering free parking at a specified location on matchdays.
The development follows earlier permissions and aligns with the club's goal of preparing the stadium for the future and responding to high supporter demand. The choice to pursue more seating followed the team's promotion to a higher division. The new seats can be constructed within the stand's already approved outline. The club believes the increased capacity will help secure the stadium's long-term use and mentions the potential to stage international games at the historic venue.
This development occurs while the team, managed by Phil Parkinson, holds a mid-table position in the league. Their recent results include a home victory. The team's next match is an away fixture.
The planning committee's decision was nearly unanimous, with only one member not voting and no opposing votes. The approved plans allow for the extra seats to be added to the new stand's second tier.
