Reading are considering a swoop for Wrexham defender Dan Scarr before the end of the transfer window, according to transfer specialist Pete O’Rourke. The 31-year-old has fallen out of favour at Wrexham, where he has made 44 appearances since joining from Plymouth Argyle in August 2024. Callum Doyle, Dominic Hyam, and Zak Vyner have limited his opportunities in the Championship side’s pecking order. Scarr, entering his final 12 months at Wrexham, is linked with a move to Reading, who seek defensive reinforcements after a 4-3 League One loss to Luton Town.

Reading head coach Leam Richardson has prioritized signing an experienced centre-back ahead of the September transfer window deadline. Scarr’s credentials include winning League One with Plymouth Argyle in 2023 and accumulating 98 third-tier appearances, five goals, and three assists. His versatility across EFL clubs, including stints at Walsall, Wycombe Wanderers, and Birmingham City, makes him an attractive option for Reading. Richardson criticized the team’s 4-3 defeat to Luton as ‘sickening,’ citing a lack of character that led to late conceding goals. The Royals conceded 60 goals last season, finishing mid-table in League One but ending the campaign with six consecutive league losses.

Scarr’s potential move could address Reading’s defensive vulnerabilities. The club’s recent match against Luton saw Benn Ward and Paudie O’Connor start at centre-back, but Richardson may look to strengthen the squad. With Scarr’s contract at Wrexham set to expire, the Championship side are unlikely to block a sale. The defender’s 20 appearances for Wrexham in the 2025/26 Championship season, alongside his goal-scoring record, could make him a key target for Reading’s defensive overhaul.
