Wrexham A.F.C. Saw a club-record £35 million bid for Lyon midfielder Pavel Sulc rejected this summer. The 25-year-old Czech international confirmed the offer but stated he did not want to join the Championship or move to a small town in Wales.
Sulc told Czech media that Wrexham's offer, worth around a billion koruna, was the highest received by Lyon. He acknowledged the club's Hollywood story but said the move did not appeal to him personally. He added that he hoped his comments would not be seen as disrespectful.
The bid would have smashed Wrexham's own transfer record and set a new high for the Championship. It underlines the significant financial backing from the club's owners as they push for Premier League promotion. Wrexham currently sit 14th in the Championship on 10 points from eight games, with their next fixture away to 22nd-placed Derby on 10 October.
Sulc, the reigning Czech Footballer of the Year, remains a key player for Lyon under manager Paulo Fonseca. He is under contract until 2029 and revealed he also had interest from Juventus and several Premier League clubs this summer, though no deal materialised. He is now focused on Lyon's campaigns in Ligue 1 and the Europa League.
For Wrexham, the failed move highlights the challenge of attracting established top-flight talent despite substantial investment. The club's recent form has been mixed, with two wins, two draws and one loss in their last five outings.
