Wrexham A.F.C. will be without Josh Windass for Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Leeds United after the striker suffered a calf injury setback. The 32-year-old, who joined the club last summer, had already missed the opening two summer fixtures in Poland and against Manchester United but was included in the 28-man squad for the US tour.

What happened to Windass?

Phil Parkinson confirmed Windass will not play in Tampa after the injury flared up during training. “He’s had a setback with his calf injury, which is a shame for Josh but that is part and parcel of football,” the Wrexham manager said. Windass finished as the club’s top scorer last season with 17 goals in all competitions, including seven in his final eight Championship appearances.

How Wrexham are preparing

Wrexham opened their pre-season with a goalless draw away to Wisła Kraków before beating Manchester United 1-0 in Helsinki thanks to Sam Smith’s first-half strike. Parkinson wants his side to build on that win when they face Leeds at Raymond James Stadium at 00:30 BST on Sunday. “It’s difficult to fully predict the personnel and the shape of the team, but it’s more about our development and progression as a team,” he added.

League standing (final 2025 table - new season not yet under way): 7th in Championship, 71 pts, 19W-14D-13L from 46 games, recent form DLWWL. Wrexham have scored 69 goals and conceded 65 this season for a +4 goal difference, 24 points behind league leaders Coventry.

What’s next for the Red Dragons?

After the Leeds fixture, Wrexham travel to New York’s Yankee Stadium to face Liverpool on Thursday, 30 July at 00:30 BST. Their US tour concludes against Sunderland at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania on Sunday, 2 August at 17:00 BST. Parkinson stressed the club never takes the tour for granted despite similar trips last summer. “A lot of the players haven’t been on a US tour with us, as we changed a lot of them last summer, and it’s great to be able to bring them here,” he said.
