Wrexham A.F.C. have been open about their goal to keep moving up the English pyramid, with that in mind, experienced defender Adam Webster could be an interesting option as Phil Parkinson works to build a team ready to secure Premier League football. The 31-year-old is now a free agent after his seven years on the south coast with Brighton & Hove Albion, when his contract ended on June 30th. Brighton confirmed the departure in May, closing a chapter where he played 158 times and scored 8 goals for the Seagulls. Wrexham should join other Championship sides like Sheffield Wednesday and the recently relegated side, West Ham United, in considering a move for Webster. While there is no confirmation of interest from the Red Dragons, his availability and experience should be a player the club considers. Wrexham finished seventh in their first Championship campaign in forty years, just missing the play-offs; now the focus is on building a squad capable of going one further this season. The focus is more than just numbers coming into the club; it’s quality and experience, and Webster ticks both of those boxes. Parkinson’s Red Dragons have already secured the summer signings of Danny Imray, Ben Whitman and Anthony Patterson from Crystal Palace, Preston North End and Sunderland respectively, adding league experience to the squad. Webster has played over 100 times for Brighton as the club established itself as a mid-table Premier League club. Webster knows how demanding the league is and what it takes to stay in it. Joining a rapidly developing club like Wrexham could be an exciting move. Wrexham already has experienced central defenders like Conor Coady, Dominic Hyam, and Callum Doyle, though the latter can fill in as a full-back as well. It’s still widely expected that Parkinson will look for one more, and a player of Webster’s quality, availability, and cost could be a solid addition. He would bring exceptional ball-playing ability to the defensive line, a player who likes to break lines with his progressive passing and possesses a serious aerial threat from set-pieces. His experience in facing top-level players and helping Brighton reach Europe could all be beneficial to Wrexham moving forward, while at 31, he still has several good years left in the tank, and those years could help Wrexham achieve its Hollywood ending. Webster started at Portsmouth before moving to Ipswich Town in 2016 where he spent two seasons in the Championship. Bristol City signed the center-back for £3.5m before a big money move to Brighton for a reported £20m. Parkinson continues to build a competitive squad for the most demanding league in football. Adding a player with Championship and Premier League experience at the heart of his defence could be a master play this summer, however interest in a player of Webster’s quality will be high.
