Paul Mullin made an emotional return to The Racecourse on Tuesday to watch his former club Wrexham A.F.C. in action. The 31-year-old striker, who left the club in 2021, was in the stands for the 2-1 Championship defeat against West Brom, a match where Kieffer Moore scored a 64th-minute consolation.
"It's good to be back at The Racecourse," Mullin said. "It's a place I've got many a fond memory, so to come back is really good." He made 172 appearances for Wrexham, scoring 110 goals and winning three consecutive Player of the Season awards during a spell that included three promotions. His most cherished memory remains the 3-1 win over Boreham Wood that clinched National League promotion. "I've got too many to name but obviously the Boreham Wood game and seeing the emotion on people's faces after it," he added.
Mullin's visit comes as Wrexham fight for stability in the second tier. The club currently sits 14th in the Championship standings with 14 points from 11 games, a record of three wins, five draws and three losses. Their recent form has been a concern, with just one win in their last five league outings, a sequence of two wins, one draw and two defeats. They are nine points adrift of leaders Swansea and need points to climb clear of the relegation zone, a fact not lost on their former star. The team has scored 15 goals this season but conceded 16, giving them a negative goal difference.
"It's not about how many goals I've got," Mullin stated. "I'd rather we had more points on the board than me have an average goal record up to now." Since his departure, Mullin signed a two-year deal with Rotherham and has netted five goals in 11 League Two appearances this season, averaging a goal every 158 minutes.
The squad will be without several key players from the squad including top scorer Kieffer Moore, who has five goals this term, and the injured N. Broadhead, L. Cacace, M. Cleworth, B. Sheaf, G. Thomason and J. Windass. The team will hope to build on the momentum from their last outing, a 4-1 victory over Preston on Saturday 17 October where goals came from Joe Worrall, Benjamin Whiteman, Sam Smith and Kieffer Moore.
