Former Wrexham A.F.C. midfielder James Jones has opened up about the challenges of being a free agent. The 30-year-old is staying patient and fit while he waits for his next opportunity in football.
Jones left Burton Albion at the end of last season after a spell affected by injuries. He became a free agent in January 2025 and is now handling the uncertainty of the market for the first time in his career. "It is difficult," Jones said.
To stay ready, the midfielder has taken advantage of support from the Professional Footballers' Association and has been training with Crewe Alexandra. "I've been at Crewe doing a bit of training as well because I know the manager there and they've been really good," he explained.
Jones was a key figure in Wrexham's recent history, joining from Lincoln City in August 2021. He played a significant role in the club's consecutive promotions from the National League to League One before his departure. His former club is now competing in the Championship, where they currently sit 14th with 14 points from 11 games, having recorded three wins and five draws.
Wrexham's last result was a convincing 4-1 home victory over Preston North End on Saturday 17 October, with goals from Joe Worrall, Benjamin Whiteman, Sam Smith, and Kieffer Moore, who is the club's top scorer this season with five goals. The team's recent form shows two wins, one draw, and two defeats from their last five matches, which included a 1-2 loss to West Brom and a 1-1 draw with Derby. They have scored 15 goals and conceded 16 so far this campaign.
They now prepare for a trip to face 10th-placed Blackburn Rovers this Saturday 24 October. The squad is currently without several players due to injury or suspension, including N. Broadhead, L. Cacace, M. Cleworth, B. Sheaf, G. Thomason, and J. Windass. Jones will continue his individual preparations, determined that when the call comes, he will be ready to answer it.
