Dom Hyam has expressed his disappointment at being left out of Scotland's Nations League squad. The Wrexham A.F.C. Captain was omitted from new manager Sebastien Pocognoli's first selection despite being part of the World Cup squad under previous boss Steve Clarke.
Sebastien Pocognoli, who signed a two-year deal in August, named a 28-man group for matches against Slovenia, Switzerland and North Macedonia. Hyam, who has four senior caps and was an unused substitute in all three of Scotland's group games in the summer, was not included. "It is a little bit tough," Hyam said. "There's a bit of change in the set-up with the new manager. But my immediate reaction was disappointment, I can't lie."
The defender confirmed he has not spoken personally with Pocognoli since his appointment. His immediate focus is now on club duties, where he remains an ever-present leader. Hyam has started all eight of Wrexham's matches this season and is part of the Championship side's leadership group. His recent form includes playing every minute of the last three games, a period in which Wrexham conceded 10 goals.
Responding to West Ham defeat
His international setback comes as Wrexham prepare to host Southampton this Saturday, following their heaviest defeat in 22 years. The 6-0 loss at West Ham United last week was the biggest of Phil Parkinson's tenure. The manager sought the opinions of Hyam and midfielder Matty James in the aftermath. "He just wanted our opinions on how we move forward from the last game and into the next one," Hyam explained. "I felt it was very important that we addressed it, but we've quickly drawn a line underneath it."
The result leaves Wrexham 19th in the Championship table with seven points from seven games. They face a Southampton side sitting 10th, despite starting the campaign with a four-point deduction. Hyam stressed the importance of a strong reaction at the Racecourse Ground. "I'm sure there'll be another few times in my career where there'll be a terrible scoreline, but that's just the way football goes," he said.
Wrexham will be without several players through injury for the match, including Max Cleworth and Luke Cacace. Check the latest injuries list for the full update on the squad's availability. The fixture kicks off at 3pm BST on Saturday, offering a chance to move on from a difficult week.
