Wrexham A.F.C. are staying calm over their lack of summer signings, with manager Phil Parkinson insisting the squad is stronger than many believe after a 1-0 preseason win over Manchester United. The Red Dragons, who finished 7th in the Championship last season with 71 points (19W-14D-13L), are the only club in the division yet to make a signing this summer.
What happened in preseason?
Wrexham opened their preseason with a draw against Wisła Kraków before defeating Manchester United 1-0 in Helsinki. The victory showed the progress made since last summer’s 13-player overhaul, which included breaking their transfer record three times in a £45 million spending spree. Midfielder George Thomason noted the squad’s improved cohesion, saying, ‘We’ve been together for a year now. Everyone knows each other and understands each other’s game.’
Why no signings yet?
Parkinson remains unfazed, stating, ‘Our focus is preseason. We made 13 changes last summer, and we want to concentrate on the group we’ve got.’ He acknowledged areas needing reinforcement but emphasized patience, adding, ‘The most important thing in the Championship is having a strong squad.’ Wrexham’s transfer window closes on September 1, leaving time for potential additions.
What’s next for Wrexham?
The Red Dragons will face Leeds United, Liverpool, and Sunderland on their U.S. tour before opening the competitive season against Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup on August 7. Their Championship campaign begins away to Cardiff City on August 17. With 24 points behind last season’s leaders Coventry, Wrexham aim to build on their 7th-place finish.
