Wrexham A.F.C. have officially appointed Steve Nickson as their new Sporting Director, bringing the former Newcastle United recruitment chief to the Racecourse Ground. The Championship club confirmed the move on Monday, 7 September 2026, as they look to build on a league position of 11th with six points from five games.

Steve Nickson joins Wrexham after 15 years at Newcastle United, where he most recently served as Head of Recruitment. The 52-year-old will report directly to CEO Michael Williamson and manager Phil Parkinson in a newly created role. His responsibilities will include leading the scouting department, overseeing the academy, and supporting first-team squad planning. Nickson previously spent 12 years at Blackburn Rovers before his long stint at St James' Park.

Manager Phil Parkinson was critical of a refereeing decision in Wrexham's recent goalless draw with Swansea City. Parkinson claimed Swansea captain Ben Cabango should have been sent off for a late challenge on Callum O'Hare. "I know we want to protect our players but, when someone flies in at that speed, that could have been a leg-breaking challenge," Parkinson said. The result leaves Wrexham five points behind leaders Swansea in the Championship table, with a goal difference of plus two after scoring six and conceding four this season.

Wrexham recorded their first Championship victory of the campaign with a 3-0 win at Millwall in midweek. Millwall's squad was decimated by injuries, with eleven senior players unavailable during the match. Wrexham took full advantage, with goals from an own goal, Kieffer Moore, and Jacques Ekomie sealing the three points. This win was vital for a side that had previously drawn three and lost one of its opening fixtures.

In a separate development, Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman expressed interest in buying a stake in Norwich City. Jackman, a long-time Norwich fan, was asked if he would follow the example of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at Wrexham. "I'm very, very interested in talking about it right now," he said. Both Norwich and Wrexham are competing in the Championship this season and are considered contenders for promotion.

Attention now turns to Wrexham's next Championship fixture, a home match against Burnley on Tuesday, 8 September. Phil Parkinson's side will look to build momentum from their win at Millwall and improve their position. The club's full schedule of upcoming games is available on our fixtures page. Steve Nickson begins his role immediately, tasked with strengthening the squad for the challenges ahead.
