Steven Gerrard is open to becoming the next manager of Wrexham A.F.C. as pressure mounts on current boss Phil Parkinson. Parkinson's position is under review following a weak start to the Championship season, with just two wins from the opening ten games.

Wrexham sit 17th in the table with 11 points, having scored 11 goals and conceded 15. Their recent form of one win, two draws and two defeats includes a 2-1 home loss to West Bromwich Albion last week, where Kieffer Moore's 64th-minute opener was cancelled out by late goals from Isaac Price and Aune Heggebo. Parkinson will take charge of Saturday's home fixture against Preston, a match that could significantly influence his future at the Racecourse Ground.

Ownership backing Parkinson amid pressure

Despite growing calls for change, Wrexham’s ownership remains loyal to Parkinson. Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney value his long-term relationship and past achievements, which include securing three promotions since his appointment in 2021 when the club was in non-league. Several members of the ownership group would prefer not to make a managerial change, buying Parkinson some time to turn results around. The club missed out on the Championship play-offs last season and results are now forcing a wider consideration of options.

Gerrard linked as potential successor

Steven Gerrard has expressed openness to managing Wrexham should a vacancy arise. The former Liverpool captain last managed a side when he left Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq in January 2025 and has not taken a dugout role since, instead working as a pundit. His first managerial role was at Rangers, where he won the SPFL title with an unbeaten season and reached a Europa League final. He later spent big money at Aston Villa before being sacked midway through his second season, and his one full season at Al-Ettifaq ended with a sixth-place finish. If Wrexham remain a Championship club next season, a move to north Wales could be a logical next step for Gerrard.

Other candidates in the frame

Scott Parker has also been identified as a possible alternative for the managerial role. New sporting director Steve Nickson is involved in the ongoing consideration process as the club assesses its options ahead of a critical run of five matches before the November international break. The club's immediate focus, however, is on the upcoming fixtures, starting with Preston this weekend.

Parkinson has asked for an immediate response from his players after the West Brom defeat. He will be without several key players through injury, including top scorer Kieffer Moore who has netted four times this season. Wrexham's next challenge is to improve a home record that has seen them take just one point from their last two matches at the Racecourse, with the visit of Preston set for Saturday.
