Wrexham A.F.C. lost 1-1 to Watford on Saturday, with Luca Kjerrumgaard scoring for the hosts. Manager Phil Parkinson said the Red Dragons had moments to win but failed to convert.
The match began with a promising start for Wrexham. Parkinson praised the team’s early performance, noting that they “started the game really well.” Wrexham’s first real chance came when new summer signing Omar Traore crossed from the left, and Kieffer Moore delivered a cross that was finished by Luca Kjerrumgaard, who headed the ball into the back of the net.
Watford responded quickly. Kieffer Moore’s cross was met by Danny Imray, whose shot was deflected past goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. Parkinson described the moment as a “tough” early concession but highlighted the team’s character and calmness in mounting a comeback.
In the second half, Wrexham dominated possession and created several key opportunities. Parkinson said the team “handled the counter‑attacking threat well” and that they were “the only team looking to win it.” Danny Imray, who had already scored, was a constant threat down the right flank, forcing the Watford defence to commit men forward. He also had a scuffed shot hit the outside of the post and was described by Parkinson as “excellent” for his performance.
The game also marked the home debut of new summer signing Ben Whiteman, who lined up alongside Imray and goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. Parkinson praised the trio, saying “Danny has settled in really well” and that the new signings were “really good.” The match was attended by club owners Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds, who watched the game from the stands.
Wrexham entered the match with two points from their opening two Championship fixtures, having drawn 2-1 against Southampton and 2-2 against Bristol City. Parkinson admitted that the team “would have liked all six points” but emphasized that the main issue was converting chances rather than creating them. He added that the club is “two points better off than we were at this stage last season.”
Looking ahead, Wrexham will host Birmingham City on Friday, 28th August. Birmingham arrived fresh from a 2-2 home draw with Bristol City, a match that ended in a 95th‑minute penalty from Demaral Gray after an own goal by Sam Tickle. Parkinson expressed optimism that the Red Dragons will “finish the touch to seal their first win of the season.”
